Meath County Board Scratch Cup 2018

It was a fabulous day for the Meath County Board Scratch Cup held in Bellewstown on Sunday 13th May 2018. The weather was perfect, the sun was shinning but a light breeze in Bellewstown was enough to make scoring difficult.

The early bird Anthony Gibney posted a 99 which lead for most of the day. 103's from Eamon Gibney, Stephen Lynch and Niall Winters were the nearest to Anthony for some time. As the entry closed there were a lot of players on the course and the challenge was on it's way.

Slowly the scores started to come with Ian Donnelly posting 100. The playoff was starting to form but local men Wally Sheridan and Anthony Kavanagh were still on the course as was Sean Goggin, George Beardsley, Ian Dillon and John Delaney.

Wally finished his 36 holes with 98 and there was a new leader. A little while later Sean Goggin posted 98 to join Wally at the top of the leaderboard, George Beardsley did 102, John Delaney 101 and the last man off the course was Anthony Kavanagh with 103 and he claimed the final place for the playoff.

The playoff got underway but there was no serious challenge to the leaders in the first nine holes however, one of the leaders, Sean Goggin, was -4 on the front nine moving to -14 and opened a large gap from the rest of the field. There was movement under way from the notorious Eamon Gibney who started to set the back nine on fire, John Delaney and Gerry Breen making progress also.

Sean's playing partner and local man Wally Sheridan had very little luck on the front nine but started the back nine well. Eamon birdied 7 out of the last 10 holes to shot a super 46. Wally was on a run of birdies on the back nine while leader Sean kept his cool and continued to knock in another four birdies to go -18 after the 16th hole. The temporary 17th hole caused a few dropped shots in the closing stages for Niall Winters, John Delaney, George Beardsley and leader Sean Goggin.

Both Sean and Wally hit excellent pitches to challenging last hole and both knocked in there puts for birdies to claim first and second. The overall results were as follows:
